Stephen Schwartz, with his talented skills gave fascinating music and compelling lyrics for the Tony award-winning American musical ‘Wicked’ which follows the tales of Glinda and Elphaba, two young witches who ultimately, become the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West correspondingly, and is set mostly before Dorothy's appearance from Kansas.
Wicked's score is beautifully themed, somewhat akin to a film score. Whilst many musical scores provide newer themes and melodies for each song with little overlap, Schwartz has incorporated leitmotifs throughout the production. Schwartz, although believes in bringing innovation in his work, yet the first musical theme for Wicked came from ‘Joan,’ on which he worked as musical director. The tune, according to him being his favorite, was used by him in order to convey different moods. With new wicked lyrics and an altered bridge, Schwartz eclipsed the motif's real sources by swapping it into a minor note; creating contrast effect in the songs.
